Jerome Klapka Jerome was an English author and humorist. He is best known for the comic travelogue Three Men in a Boat. He was born in Caldmore, Walsall England on the second of May 1859. He was born in the family of Marguerite Jones and Jerome Clapp as their fourth son. He had two sisters and one brother who died at an early age. Jerome's family went into poverty due to bad investments in the local mining industry.
Jerome was forced to give up studies and find a job after the death of his parents. He got a job in the London and North Western Railway. Initially, he was employed to collect coal that fell along the railway. He remained there for 4 years.
Jerome's dream was to join politics or become an author. On the 21st of June 1888 Jerome got married to Georgina Elizabeth Henrietta Stanley Marris. They went on their honeymoon to River Thames and travelled around in a little boat. His honeymoon inspired Jerome to write Three Men in a Boat.
Originally, Three Men in a Boat was supposed to be a travel guide. with accounts of local history. However, the humorous elements took over and today Three Men in a Boat is considered a comic novel instead of a serious travel guide.
